(Wip 24x30) Long day today. Wiped this one out three times. Gonna let it set a little like this for a couple of days. I've got a similar size wave thing in the abandoned pile I'm gonna pull out tmw to see if I can resurrect, which in turn might help with this one. 🤞🏻
This was the last thing I expected to see after hiking down a less than welcoming trail winding down what could nearly be called a cliff, and across about a mile of beach. What has been nicknamed the Mushroom House is formally called The Bell Pavilion and was designed by Dale Naegle in 1965 as a guest house for Sam Bell. It is important to note that the fence isn’t original, and that whenever Naegle was asked why he designed the house the way he did, his response was “to resist the most destructive force in nature... teenagers!”
Other quality quotes of his:
“In those days we liked to draw. We treated people who liked to draw better than those who didn’t draw.”
“I loved La Jolla back then because of its sense of place. You knew you left somewhere and felt you arrived. The cove was the heart. La Jolla was not defined by its border, but of its heart. I thought to myself- I’m going to work all my life; I’m never going to take a vacation; I may as well live in a vacation setting.”
Naegle ended up having designed up to 100,000 homes, and I just happened upon one of his most notable. .
